DOMAIN NAMES & WEB SITE HOSTING
Choosing a domain name and getting the right host.
DOMAIN NAMES:
I suggest that before you buy a domain name, you first have chosen a web designer and discussed the choice with her/him. Often web designers work with one domain registering agent and are provided with discounts for domain name registrations. It is also easier for the designer if the domain is registered through the same agent because it provides easier administrative access should changes to name servers, etc. be required. Additionally, your web designer will be able to offer you advice on what your domain name should be.
If you choose to buy a domain name prior to choosing a web designer, then here are some things to remember.
Once you've decided to put your business on the internet, your web site will need a host. Again, as with the domain name, it is important to choose a web designer prior to getting a host. The designer will have a host that they use on a regular basis which they know to be reliable and to have the systems and features needed to facilitate your web site.
If you choose a host prior to selecting your web designer, you may find that the host you've chosen does not run on the right system or doesn't have the proper features for your web designer to properly set up your site. Additionally, there are many unreliable hosts and you won't know until you've started having trouble with it that you made the wrong choice.

If you choose to buy a domain name prior to choosing a web designer, then here are some things to remember.
- It is important that your domain name be simple, memorable and reflect your business.
- A .com or .net are generally preferable to country specific names like .co.uk or .es for example. First because they are more memorable and second because they are generic (non country specific) and give the impression of a worldwide audience. For instance a holiday rentals company based in Spain with a .co.uk domain name gives the impression that you are only targetting UK residents, which is not necessarily the case.
- If you have exhausted all possibilities for a .com or .net domain name and must look elsewhere, first try .info or .biz and then finally .co.uk or .es, etc.
